Maths Badge of Excellence

Our Maths Badge of Excellence programme is designed for students with special educational needs (SEN), focusing on core mathematical skills from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5. We use a multisensory, adaptable approach to learning that ensures each student progresses at their own pace, building confidence and proficiency in essential mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The programme includes hands-on activities, real-life applications, and assessment methods that track each student’s development through concrete evidence.

Key Stage 1 (Ages 5-7)

Foundations in Basic Operations

Learning Aims

  • Develop number sense up to 20

  • Introduce counting, simple addition, and subtraction using concrete objects

  • Build an understanding of patterns, shapes, and simple word problems

Modules

  • Addition Basics: Focus on counting, combining groups, and using number lines.

  • Subtraction Basics: Understanding "taking away" with visuals and objects.

  • Introduction to Multiplication: Grouping counters and repeated addition.

  • Division as Sharing: Introduction to sharing and grouping.

Assessment Evidence

  • Photos of student working with objects

  • Worksheets with pictorial additions

  • Verbal explanations captured via video

Key Stage 2 (Ages 7-11)

Building Confidence in Operations

Learning Aims

  • Solidify understanding of number bonds and place value

  • Expand operations to numbers up to 100

  • Develop problem-solving strategies for word problems

Modules

  • Multiplication and Division Foundations: Times tables and division facts.

  • Practical Problem Solving: Applying maths to real-life scenarios.

Assessment Evidence

  • Written calculations

  • Worksheets on word problems

  • Student reflections and video explanations

Key Stage 3 (Ages 11-14)

Developing Operational Proficiency

Learning Aims

  • Increase fluency with the four operations

  • Introduce written methods for multiplication and division

Modules

  • Advanced Addition and Subtraction: Mental and column addition/subtraction.

  • Multiplication Mastery: Two-digit multiplication techniques.

  • Division with Remainders: Division with counters and real-life contexts.

Assessment Evidence

  • Student work on lattice multiplication

  • Division exercises with remainder interpretation

Key Stage 4 (Ages 14-16)

Strengthening Conceptual Understanding

Learning Aims

  • Strengthen proficiency in all operations with multiple digits

  • Practice complex, multi-step problem solving

Modules

  • Complex Addition and Subtraction: Adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers.

  • Multiplying and Dividing by Powers of 10: Scaling numbers.

  • Practical Applications: Solving real-world multi-step problems.
