English Badge of Excellence

The English Badge of Excellence programme supports students with special educational needs (SEN) in developing essential literacy skills. Spanning from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5, this curriculum builds proficiency in reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation through tailored activities, real-life applications, and a portfolio-based assessment approach. Each stage is designed to nurture and develop students' skills step-by-step.

Key Stage 1 (Ages 5-7)

 Developing Phonemic Awareness and Basic Writing Skills

Learning Aims

  • Develop phonemic awareness and decoding skills

  • Engage in simple reading comprehension

  • Begin basic writing skills

Modules

  • Reading: Recognising letters and sounds, blending sounds into words.

  • Writing: Forming letters and writing basic words and sentences.

  • Grammar and Punctuation: Using capital letters and full stops.

Assessment Evidence

  • Audio recordings of reading aloud

  • Handwriting samples

  • Worksheets with spelling exercises

Key Stage 2 (Ages 7-11)

Expanding Reading and Writing Skills

Learning Aims

  • Improve reading fluency and comprehension

  • Expand vocabulary and sentence structure

  • Write short paragraphs using descriptive language
